Top Ten Scariest Books To Read This Halloween

We have already published a couple of articles of what to do this Halloween other than wear costumes, and party, and drink, and hook up. Just in case you find those boring, we have listed down scariest video games, television shows opening this fall, even scary movies you’d like to watch (with a companion).

But if you still find these boring…that’s probably because you’re a book person, like me! And boy do I have an exciting top ten list for you – the top ten scariest books you can read this Halloween.

10. The Exorcist by William Peter Blatty

Let us start the list with an absolute classic. If you think the movie (also a classic) scared the wits out of you, then you should definitely give the source material a reading. You won’t be disappointed!

9. Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy

Delve into the scary and gory world of scalp hunters. A word of warning though, there are some images and characters in this book that wouldn’t be that easy to forget.

8. Blindness by Jose Saramago

Sure, this book is scary. All of the books on this list are. But what makes this book really scary was how it eerily predicted the coming of Hurricane Katrina and the disaster that we had to suffer.

7. Cock & Bull by Will Self

Perfect for those who love crazy. I mean, really bonkers type of crazy. We’re talking about a lady growing a penis and using it to rape her husband, and a man growing a vagina behind his knee being raped by his doctor. Totally, creepy crazy but also worth the read.

6. The Trial by Franz Kafka

Ghosts, monsters, an out-of-control government, all of these are scary for sure, but there’s still nothing scarier than not being able to control your own fate and that is exactly what this book is all about.

5. Dracula by Bram Stoker

Read about the story where popular icons Count Dracula and Van Helsing came from. Of course, there are still a lot of other vampire stories out there, some of which even include vampires with sparkly skin, but nothing beats an absolute classic.

4. The Silence Of The Lambs by Thomas Harris

Dr. Hannibal Lecter has turned into a pop icon, but before the movie which made him iconic, there was the book. If the movie didn’t succeed in giving you nightmares (though I seriously doubt that), this book surely would.

3. American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis

This is by far one of the scariest books ever written, so much so that I even have friends who still can’t finish the book after numerous attempts of reading and rereading it.

2. Hell House by Richard Matheson

There are books that people with medical conditions really should stay away from – one of those books is Hell House. In fact, even the horror legend Stephen King himself declared this book to be the BEST haunted house novel ever written.

1. It by Stephen King

You guys must have suspected this already, after all, Stephen King IS the king of horror. In fact, we can create an entire top ten list of all his novels and it still wouldn’t be enough. He has indeed created a lot of stories which would us forever. But the big guy of all these stories is It. The reason why a lot of us are scared of clowns. And while you’re at it, you might want to watch the latest movie remake of this book as well.
