It can be incredibly tough breaking into Hollywood, it’s not enough that you’ve got a pretty face and can sing or act or dance well. Cause there’ll be hundreds just like you, hopeful and just waiting for their big break. Some people spend their entire lives waiting for a break that just won’t come, that spot in a hit TV show, or a role in a movie, or a recording contract, that big moment where the spotlight is on you and people are coming to acknowledge your talents and potential. For a lucky few, the big moments did come through for them last year. But for how long and how far will that breakout role lead to? Who knows. But we sure will be looking out for their projects this year.
10. FKA Twigs
She is well known as Robert Pattinson’s fiancee, but there’s more to this talented singer and songwriter than her trophy boyfriend. The part-Jamaican, part-British beauty started out as a backup dancer to Jessie J and Kylie Minogue when she was just 17. She then self-released her music debut on Bandcamp with accompanying videos on her Youtube channel. Her music can be summed up as R&B with an ethereal, dark touch. Her artistry extends beyond her compositions and songwriting, well into directing her unique music videos. With a career as blossoming as her personal private life, we’ll be sure to hear more from her this year.
9. Alicia Vikander
The Swedish actress and dancer made us sit up and take notice when she appeared in Anna Karenina. But unbeknownst to us, she has long garnered critical praise and recognition from award-giving bodies with her portrayal of the troubled and anxious Katarina in Pure way back in 2010. This past year alone, she appeared in a total of eight films, notably The Danish Girl and The Man From U.N.C.L.E. This year, watch out for her appearing alongside Michael Fassbender and Christoph Waltz. She is also slated to star in the fifth Bourne film.
8. Lea Seydoux
She first made waves appearing as the sensual blue-haired Emma who upon being seen briefly while crossing the street triggers the bi-curious fantasies of another woman in the critically acclaimed Blue Is The Warmest Color, for which she won the prestigious Palme d’Or at Cannes Film Festival. Now the Kate Moss lookalike French actress has taken Hollywood by storm, a certified Bond girl in the latest instalment of the famous franchise, Spectre. Lea first dreamed of becoming an opera singer and went on to study music, then she fell in love with an actor and decided to become an actress to impress him. Funny how things do or don’t work out eh? We’re just glad fate brought this beautiful girl to our cinemas.
7. Lily James
The former Downton Abbey star was cast perfectly as ‘Cinderella’ in the latest adaptation of the fairy tale from Disney. She has a natural, effortless, regal quality about her that makes heads turn and jaws drop as soon as she enters a room or walks down a red carpet. She then starred in another adaptation, but this time, with a twist, in Pride and Prejudice and Zombies where she met her current boyfriend Matt Smith or Dr. Who.
6. Gina Rodriguez
The American born Puerto Rican actress recently won a Golden Globe nod for her role as the title character in CW’s Jane The Virgin. This is just the start for the talented 31-year-old, she is currently working on her debut album. When she’s not busy filming, recording, and hosting, she works on her charities and the lingerie line she set up to benefit women of all shapes, sizes, and walks of life. She may play the titular virgin whose life is turned upside down by an accidental artificial insemination on TV, but in real life, girl is keeping a firm grip on her career. There is nothing accidental in her achievements.
5. Daisy Ridley
The English actress’ debut in Hollywood is sure to make a splash as she was just recently cast to play a major role in one of the most successful film franchises in history, the cult icon Star Wars. The decision to cast a relative unknown may seem as a surprise to all of us but it is director J.J. Abrams’ nod to George Lucas. The gamble sure paid off with critical praise for her portrayal of the tough and tender Rey. She will next be ‘heard’ voicing the main character in the animated movie Only Yesterday, to be released this year.
In 2009, the young and talented Zendaya auditioned for the Disney series Shake It Up. Her role was so successful in the show that it led to a Billboard topping hit. But before that big break, the pretty biracial teen has been modelling at the age of 13. Her distinct beauty, and personal style has made her a darling in the fashion industry with major designers fighting for the chance to dress her. More than her gorgeous looks, and impressive talents, this is one girl that’s got the ‘It’ factor.
3. Gigi Hadid
You may have first noticed her appearing in The Real Housewives Of Beverly Hills with her mom Yolanda Foster, or in Kendal Jenner’s Instagram posts, or in ex-boyfriends Cody Simpson and Joe Jonas’ famous arms. But now there’s no denying Gigi has become the quintessential ‘It’ girl, walking down the prestigious Victoria Secret runway, where she made her debut alongside BFF Kendal Jenner. The stunning green-eyed blonde has also snagged some sweet modelling and endorsement projects from big names like Maybelline and Tom Ford. She is currently dating the former boy band member Zayn Malik.
2. Dakota Johnson
You may think being a celebrity child to famous parents is a sure ticket to stardom, but Dakota sure doesn’t see it that way. They say the fastest way to get noticed in Hollywood is to ‘expose’ yourself. Done right, you’ll open lots of doors, done wrong then the only fame you’ll ever find is in Mr. Skins’ website. But for Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson’s daughter, the exposure made heads turn and take notice when she took on the role of the naive, unassuming Anastasia in Fifty Shades Of Gray, an adaptation of the bestselling erotica of a Twilight fan fiction author. If her willingness to bare it all is any indication of her dedication as an actor, then we’re certain we’ll be seeing more of Dakota this year. She recently tried her hand in comedy, starring in How To Be Single with Rebel Wilson.
1. Gal Gadot
The stunning Israeli actress is making waves in Hollywood as she was recently cast as the iconic Wonder Woman in the upcoming Batman vs. Superman film. Fitting for a woman whose name in Hebrew translates to ‘waves’. She first began modelling, appearing in a Maxim cover feature ‘Women Of The Israeli Army’, which featured models who had once served the IDF. Setting her sights on acting, Gal proved she’s more than just a pretty face by doing all her stunts in the 4th instalment of The Fast And The Furious. She has three upcoming fils to be released this year, and who knows what the DC Cinematic Universe will have in store for this badass beauty? We’ll have to wait and see.
