If you are a student in university and you are majoring in film, you know for a fact that it will cost you a lot of money just to pass even one major class. There are many projects that you would need to do which requires a lot of filming with film gear. That’s pretty obvious already because you are a film student after all. But if you haven’t noticed, your not just studying film, you are a student. Most students are barely surviving their college life, let alone being in a major that will cost a lot of money just to make one five-minute film.

Making a film, even if it’s just a few minutes long requires a lot of time and effort. But what most people don’t realize is that it also costs a lot of money. And this money comes straight out of the student’s pocket. Some might get funding for the school, but for the most part, students would have to rely on websites that will ask for donations. But why does it cost so much? The equipment alone already costs hundreds of dollars so it really does make sense that it is an expensive major to be in.

If you are a struggling film student, here are a few tips to find film gear on a budget!

Purchase a camcorder that’s not too expensive.

Before you think about the long term investments of buying an expensive professional camcorder, give yourself some time to save up first. What you can do is you can buy a relatively cheaper camcorder and start learning the basics. Learn as much as you can with that camcorder so that you won’t have to take too much time once you do get the expensive ones. From frame angling to lighting, it will be a big help to know the ropes first before diving into the experts. You are still a college student after all.

Visit Lowe’s more often.

As a student who cannot afford to buy expensive lighting, Lowe’s should be your best friend from now on. They have a variety of lighting that is relatively cheap compared to the expensive stuff. They practically give almost the same result anyways. It’s all about editing now so you should focus your time, effort, and money on that instead of stressing about the lighting. Although it is important, the alternatives at Lowe’s will do with your budget in mind.
