The Baltimore Ravens are the new NFL champions after beating the San Francisco 49ers, 34-31, in New Orleans. It was a tightly contested matchup, but in the end, John Harbaugh won over his little brother, Jim, thanks to a near unstoppable performance of Joe Flacco who was named the Super Bowl MVP.
After a three and out for the Niners in the start of the game, Flacco quickly took his team to a 7-0 lead thanks to a touchdown pass to Anquan Boldin. Colin Kaepernick answered with a good drive but an errant throw made San Francisco settle for just a field goal. Then Flacco continued his first half show.
He led a 75 yard touchdown drive after a critical LaMichael James fumble, and then he connected with a wide open Jacoby Jones for a 56-yard touchdown to make it 21-3. With his 3rd touchdown, the polarizing quarterback, joined a very, very elite company, having 11 touchdowns and 0 interceptions during these playoffs.
The 49ers closed the first half with a field goal to make it 21-6, even though Kaepernick has thrown a crucial interception late in the 2nd quarter. Then the 2nd half came, and Jacoby Jones started it with an unbelievable 108-yard kickoff return to up the Ravens up by 28-6 and things looked really bad for San Francisco.
The 30 minute power outage from the Mercedes Benz Superdome completely reversed the momentum and the Niners were quickly back in the game thanks to a 31 yard touchdown pass to Michael Crabtree and a Frank Gore rushing touchdown which took the score to 28-20. After a pair of field goals, the score was 31-23 but Kaepernick led another drive which finished with a record breaking 15 yard touchdown run by the 49ers quaterback.
They’ve tried a 2 point conversion to level the score but that failed, and the Ravens took over with a 31-29 lead. Flacco had a good drive once again, but it ended only with a field goal that took Baltimore up by just five points with under five minutes remaining.
The 49ers took over once again and Kaepernick, who was red hot in the second half, looked like he could take the victory for his team. He led his team down to the 5 yard line, but the Ravens defense, led by Ray Lewis, made the biggest goal line stand to regain control of the ball, with less than 2 minutes remaining.
The Ravens took the clock down to just a couple of seconds and instead of punting the ball, they’ve made a surprising decision with Sam Koch running out of his own end zone for a safety to eat even more seconds. The 49ers weren’t able to return the kick and that’s how Baltimore secured the victory, 34-31, in Super Bowl XLVII. You can see the game highlights here, in case you’ve missed them.
