The 23-ton Lego X-Wing Starfighter

The LEGO star wars X-wing starfighter has been introduced in New York’s City Times Square as the company’s largest model built to-date. An international team of 32 designers, builders, engineers, mechanics and logistics experts spent 17,336 hours bringing this full-scale spaceship from brainstorm to reality using the same bricks and elements featured in the general LEGO retail collection at the LEGO Model Shop in Kladno, Czech Republic.

The model of the classic Star Wars fighter, a super-sized version of Star Wars Lego Starfighter set #9493, has a wingspan of 44 feet (13.44 meters) and comes complete with the awesome R2-D2 and full range sound effects. It was built with 5,335,200 Lego bricks, eclipsing the Lego robot at the Mall of America by some 2 million bricks. This replica of the Rebel Alliance dogfighter is 42 times the size of the Lego version we’ve all built, with a length of 43 feet (13.1 meters), height of 11 feet (3.35 meters) and weight 45,980 pounds (20,865 kilograms).

Plans for the model were created using Lego’s proprietary 3-D design software, and the model was heavily engineered to withstand all the transportation, setup/break down and to ensure it was safe for Times Square and for the LEGOLAND® California Resort installation, where the model will eventually be installed for the remainder of the year.
