Under the blistering summer heat, cold drinks are staple to our diet.After every meal, we tend to drink something cold to combat the warmth of our surroundings. Some just drink iced water while others drink cold beer. But to most of us who live on fast food, soda is the way to go. From Dr. Pepper to Coke to Mountain Dew and so much more, there are just so many options for us to choose from that it’s hard to avoid them when we drop by the nearest burger joint. But just like everything else in this world, over consumption of something can cause serious health issues. Here are a few health risks of drinking too much soda.
Sugar, sugar and more sugar.
Sugar is basically the main ingredient of carbonated drinks and everybody knows that too much sugar can cause a lot of complications in the body. Diabetes is one of the most common illnesses in America and that is partly because of the constant consumption of sodas. With too much sugar in your system, your blood sugar will rise and will have a reaction that can cause diabetes in the most severe form.
The debatable caffeine.
This is definitely not a threatening factor because Americans consume so much coffee that caffeine in sodas barely make up the caffeine over consumption of the population. However, if you are already an avid drinker of coffee, then drinking lots of soda is already adding salt to the wound. There are studies that show that caffeine can cause cancer. Although that is still widely debated, it may become fact if there is no moderation. So if you drink coffee three times a day, then drinking soda at the fast food restaurant for dinner might not be the best idea.
Sweeteners at their finest.
A lot of sodas have high fructose corn syrup that is a sweetener that can cause your heart not to function properly if too much of it gets into your body. Heart complications and diseases can arise if there is a build up of this sweetener in your system. Heart diseases are the most common cause of death in America and giving your body a reason to malfunction should already be a red light for you and your soda obsession.
Just because there are health risks to drinking soda does not mean you have to drop it all together. As we have mentioned before, moderation is key and if you control your soda consumption, then you are less likely to get these health issues.
